I write quite a bit about Health and Fitness here on The John Denn Blog. I’ve always been pretty physically active, but ever since my 60-pound weight loss journey back in 2020, health and fitness have become a large passion of mine. Part of my health and fitness routine includes macronutrient tracking. In the past, I’ve used a variety of apps. (For years, I swore by the Lose It! app.) Recently, my preference has switched. Now, I’m an avid user of a new app called MacroFactor. Here are 5 reasons why MacroFactor has become my preferred macro tracker.

Before scrolling any further, why not go grab yourself a nice, little snack or drink or any other tiny indulgence to enjoy while reading? Kick back, relax, and hang on the site for a minute. You have my permission. ðŸ˜„

Encouraging Interface

With many apps, if you exceed your daily calorie allowance, you’ll notice some kind of “negative” marker in the interface. Usually, this takes the form of some kind of red bar to alert you that you’ve exceeded your daily limit. Personally, I always find these red bars to be disarming and discouraging. To avoid the visible reminder of eating too much (even if just by a little bit), I often choose to selectively log foods on other apps, just to keep my interface looking nice. Obviously, lying about food intake defeats the purpose of macro tracking – but I don’t want to be shamed every time I log into my tracker!

With MacroFactor, there is no discouraging interface if you exceed your limits any given day. If you exceed your allowance, there is no glaring message letting you know. Because believe me, other apps, and take note: People know when they’ve exceeded a limit. There is no need to mark up their screens like a schoolteacher using a red pen!

Weight Analytics

I love the weight analytics on MacroFactor. The app offers two: Scale Weight and Trend Weight. Your Scale Weight tracks — you’ve guessed it — your day-to-day scaled weight (or however often you opt to log your weight). Your Trend Weight takes the average of your Scale Weights and tracks these.

I like this feature because “up” days on the scale feel quite discouraging. Not to mention, your Scale Weight can change drastically due to an array of variables. One bad day of eating can show you weight gains of several pounds, which never feels wonderful.

With MacroFactor, I’ve shifted my focus away from the Scale Weight and instead toward the Trend Weight. Now, I don’t feel so bad if my Scale Weight is up a couple pounds every once in a while. As you continue logging more scale weight data, an “up” scale day impacts the Trend Weight less and less. This allows MacroFactor to track your “true” weight far more accurately than day-to-day scale fluctuations do.

Customizable Plans

What first drew me into MacroFactor was its customizable plans feature. After inputting some basic information (such as current weight, your preferred diet, whether you want to gain or lose, the rate you want to gain or lose, and your physical activity levels), MacroFactor generates a custom strategy for you! This strategy gives you a daily calorie allowance, as well as a macronutrient breakdown. You can even customize your plan to fluctuate calorie targets from day-to-day (e.g. more calories on exercise days, less calories on rest days).

What’s most unique is that your MacroFactor plan is not stagnant. Each week, the app will analyze your data and update your plan accordingly. I’ve never seen an app do this before — and it’s really quite amazing to have up-to-date information at all times!

Custom Recipes

Most macro tracker apps provide a way to input custom recipes, but MacroFactor does it best. Recipe creation is exceptionally intuitive, and the barcode scanning feature makes recipe creation all the easier. Simply logging in grams the total weight of the ingredients (which MacroFactor does for you, so no adding for you!), and you can easily log the portions you eat. As a bonus: Finding your custom recipes is easy to do, as well. There an entire section of the app (accessible from the main navigation) dedicated to your custom recipes, which I’ve never seen on an app before.

As someone who loves to cook and repeat meals, being able to easily log go-to meals with a click of a button is such a fantastic feature.

MacroFactor’s AI Feature

Admittedly, I don’t use this feature all too often, but it’s still a pretty cool one. Within the app, you’ll find a feature called “AI.” Simply type a description of what you’ve eaten (the more details the better), and MacroFactor’s AI will pull and log ingredients for you.

I really only use this feature when I go out to a restaurant to describe what I just ate. (For example: I went out to eat and had a chicken quesadilla with a flour tortilla and a half a plate of rice.) This is particularly handy if you combine MacroFactor’s AI with voice-to-text, just for the sake of convenience.

Now, do I think MacroFactor’s AI feature is 100% accurate? Well, no. Usually, I have to tweak the suggested foods after using this feature. However, it gets you close enough and typically only needs a few minor adjustments.
