Harry Potter inspired cocktails are not a new concept. A simple Google search will yield thousands of results, but most of these are going to be recycled recipes.

The recipes you will find on this list, on the other hand, are completely unique, original, and self-created. (This experiment really allowed me to combine two of my favorite things in life: Harry Potter and alcohol.)

Each recipe you’ll find below was based on a Potter universe potion and crafted with the actual book descriptions in mind. I attempted to replicate each potion’s appearance and, where applicable, replicate the taste (but don’t worry, I did not go for “Essence of Crabbe” in the Polyjuice Potion, like Harry experienced in Chamber of Secrets).

And now I’m excited to share them with you! You can either browse at will or Apparate right to a specific potion cocktail by using the Table of Contents.

Table of Contents

  1. Butterbeer
  2. Felix Felicis
  3. Polyjuice Potion
  4. Amortentia
  5. Firewhisky
  6. Veritaserum
  7. Bonus: Drinkware!

Butterbeer

When you think of “Harry Potter” beverages, is there anything more iconic than butterbeer? Surely not.

Of all the recipes on this list, my butterbeer recipe is probably the least unique (only because I feel like spiked butterbeer has been recreated ad nauseam) — but here’s my take on this popular cocktail!

Ingredients

  • Bailey’s Irish Cream
  • Vanilla Vodka
  • Butterscotch Soda
  • Whipped cream
  • Sugar

Instructions

  1. Pour one bottle or can of Butterscotch soda into serving glass
  2. Combine 2 oz Vanilla Vodka and 4 oz Bailey’s Irish Cream in your shaker, shake well
  3. Pour shaken vodka and Irish cream into serving glass, stir together
  4. Take one spoonful of sugar, add to serving glass
  5. Stir sugar into soda, vodka, and Irish cream
  6. Top drink with a LOT of whipped cream — butterbeer is described as “foaming over” in the books, so be overly generous with your foaming.
  7. Enjoy!

Felix Felicis

A delicious, Potter-inspired take on your classic mimosas. You’ll make this drink the exact same way as a mimosa, except you’re using ginger beer and just a dash of simple syrup instead of orange juice.

Ingredients

  • Prosecco or Champagne
  • Ginger Beer
  • Simple Syrup

You can make these even more fun with this Hogwarts-House-looking champagnes from Bomon Shampe! Tell me these bottles don’t give Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin vibes. (You best believe we’ll be purchasing these bottles for our Harry Potter Movie Marathon party in a couple weeks.)

Polyjuice Potion

Polyjuice Potion is described as “thick and mud-like,” so we’re basing this Harry Potter inspired cocktail on a coke float.

Ingredients

  • Rum
  • Coca-Cola
  • Ice Cream

Instructions

  1. Add 2 oz of rum to your serving glass
  2. Top off glass with Coca-Cola
  3. Stir ingredients several times to mix rum and Coca-Cola
  4. Add 1-2 scoops of ice cream. You can use any kind of ice cream, but I’m going with chocolate to keep the “muddy” look.

Amortentia

In Harry Potter, Amortentia is known as the strongest love potion in the world, capable of eliciting extreme obsession in someone who drinks it. Described as having a “mother of pearl sheen,” our Amortentia is going to be inspired by the classic vodka cranberry — but purple!

Ingredients

  • Plain Vodka
  • Cranberry Juice
  • Purple Food Coloring
  • Shaved iced

Instructions

  1. Add 2 oz of vodka, 6 oz of cranberry juice, and shaved ice (from the refrigerator is fine) to your shaker, shake well
  2. Slowly add purple food coloring, 1-2 drops at a time. Stir each drop in individually. If don’t correctly, you’ll see streaks of purple within the red cranberry.
  3. Enjoy!

Firewhisky

In the Harry Potter books, Firewhisky is known for the burning sensation drinkers experience, so get ready for a drink with a kick!

This recipe is easy enough, requiring only two ingredients. Simply take a dry cider of your choice, throw a shot of Fireball into it, and call it a day. Enjoy! (And brace yourself!)

Ingredients

  • Dry Cider of your choice
  • Fireball Whiskey

Veritaserum

Veritaserum in the Potter Universe is known as “Truth Serum.” In the series, it as “clear and odorless, [almost indistinguishable from] water.”

Now, part of me wanted to write, “Just take a shot of Everclear and call it a day,” because once you have a shot of 190-proof Everclear, you’re bound to start spilling secrets. However, I want to be nice to you because I want you to come back to me, so I crafted another, tamer recipe 😊

Instead, we’re going for a far more pleasant option: a vodka seltzer. This simple recipe only requires two ingredients. I bet you can guess what they are! If you guessed vodka and seltzer, you’re right! Simply take a seltzer of your choice, pour it into a serving glass, add a shot of vodka in there, and that’s it!

This drink will be a little more carbonated than the Veritaserum described in the book, but you can remedy that by sprinkling a little bit of sugar in there to eat up the bubbles.

Like I said, a tamer version of Veritaserum, but hey — at least drinking this Veritaserum will be far more enjoyable (and likely cause far less betrayal, @Marietta Edgecomb — iykyk).

Ingredients

  • Plain Vodka
  • Hard Seltzer of your choosing
  • Sugar
